Working Holiday Maker Visa Updates 2026–2027: Applications Open, Age Changes, Ballots and Country Caps

The Department of Home Affairs has released important updates for the 2026–2027 Working Holiday Maker program, including the opening date for capped Work and Holiday visa applications, age eligibility changes for some passport holders, ballot updates, and changes to country-specific requirements. These updates are important for young people planning to travel, work and holiday in Australia under the Working Holiday visa subclass 417 or Work and Holiday visa subclass 462.

Below are the Working Holiday Maker Visa Updates 2026–2027

First Work and Holiday Visa Applications Open on 2 July 2026

  • Applications for first Work and Holiday subclass 462 visas for countries subject to annual caps open on 2 July 2026, Australian Eastern Standard Time
  • The Department has advised that this opening date allows scheduled system maintenance at the start of the new program year to be completed before applications are lodged.
  •  Applicants should check the Status of Country Caps before applying, as some countries have limited annual places and caps may fill quickly.

Increased Age Eligibility for Cyprus, Finland, Germany and Republic of Korea Applicants

From 1 July 2026, passport holders from the following countries are eligible to apply for a Working Holiday subclass 417 visa if they are 18 to 35 years of age inclusive

  1. Cyprus
  2. Finland
  3. Germany
  4. Republic of Korea
  • Eligible applicants may lodge a Working Holiday visa application up to 11:59 pm AEST on the day before their 36th birthday.
  • This is a significant change for applicants from these countries who may have previously thought they had aged out of the program.

Uruguay Cap Increased to 1,500 Places

  • From 1 July 2026, up to 1,500 first Work and Holiday subclass 462 visas are available each program year for eligible Uruguay passport holders.
  • This increase finalises a previously agreed amendment to the Work and Holiday arrangement between Australia and Uruguay.

Luxembourg Applicants No Longer Need a Letter of Support

  • From 3 June 2026, Luxembourg passport holders no longer need to provide a Letter of Support with their Work and Holiday subclass 462 visa application.
  • This change simplifies the application process for eligible Luxembourg applicants.

China, India and Vietnam Ballot Registrations Have Closed

  • Registrations for the China, India and Vietnam Work and Holiday subclass 462 visa ballot for the 2026–2027 program year closed on Thursday, 25 June 2026
  • Applicants from these countries must follow the visa pre-application ballot process and can only apply if they are selected through the ballot.
  • Those who registered should keep checking their ImmiAccount and email for updates about ballot selection dates and next steps.

Czech Republic Work and Holiday Program Remains Open

  • The Pilot Work and Holiday Visa Arrangement between Australia and the Czech Republic has been extended.
  • Eligible Czech applicants can apply online for a Work and Holiday visa through ImmiAccount, subject to meeting the relevant visa criteria.

Philippines Work and Holiday Arrangement Not Yet Open

  • Australia and the Philippines signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a Work and Holiday subclass 462 visa arrangement on 8 September 2023.
  • Once launched, the arrangement will allow up to 200 young Filipino and Australian passport holders each year to enjoy a 12-month holiday in each other’s country, with short-term work and study rights.
  • However, the program has not yet commenced. Both countries are still completing the administrative arrangements needed before the program can launch.
  • The Department will publish the start date and further requirements once finalised, including details about how Filipino passport holders can obtain a Letter of Concurrence from their government.

UK Passport Holders and the Australia–UK Free Trade Agreement

  • Following the Australia–UK Free Trade Agreement, new Working Holiday Maker arrangements apply to UK passport holders.
  • UK passport holders should check the specific subclass 417 visa requirements before applying, including eligibility for first, second and third Working Holiday visas.

Reminder: 6-Month Work Limitation with One Employer

  • Working Holiday Makers can generally work in any occupation or industry while in Australia.
  • However, visa condition 8547 limits most Working Holiday Maker visa holders to a maximum of 6 months’ work with any one employer, unless their work falls within a blanket exemption or they obtain written permission from the Department to work longer for the same employer.
  • Applicants and visa holders should check their visa grant conditions carefully and seek advice before continuing employment beyond the permitted period.

Processing Delays for Working Holiday Maker Visas

  • The Department is currently receiving a high number of Working Holiday subclass 417 and Work and Holiday subclass 462 visa applications.
  • As a result, processing may take longer than usual.
  • Applicants should ensure their application is decision-ready and includes all required documents at the time of lodgement. Applications with complete and accurate information may be finalised faster than incomplete applications.
  • Importantly, applicants should not arrange travel to Australia until they have received written confirmation that their visa has been granted.
