How the New Sponsor Register Could Help Skilled Workers?

Sponsor Register

A significant change is coming for employer sponsors, and it may also benefit potential employees.

The Migration Amendment (Combatting Migrant Exploitation) Bill 2025 has now passed, paving the way for a public register of approved standard business sponsors and accredited sponsors who have nominated skilled workers for entry to Australia.

The information published may include:
• the type of approved work sponsor
• the sponsor’s name
• the sponsor’s ABN
• the postcode linked to the ABN
• the number of nominations made
• the kinds of occupations covered by those nominations

This register is intended to improve transparency across the skilled migration system and is likely to be an important development for businesses that sponsor overseas workers.

It may also help potential employees by giving them greater visibility over which businesses have an active sponsorship history, whether employers have previously nominated workers in relevant occupations, and which sponsors may already be familiar with the skilled migration process. This could help sponsored workers make more informed decisions when considering employment opportunities in Australia.

If you are a business that currently sponsors workers, or you are planning to become a sponsor, now is the time to make sure your sponsorship records, nomination history and compliance practices are in order.

Employers should also keep an eye out for stakeholder consultation and future Department updates around how the register will operate in practice.
