NSW Skilled Migration Program 2026–27

Subclass 190 program opens, first invitation round expected in October 2026.

The NSW Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) nomination program is now open for 2026–27. NSW expects to hold its first invitation round in the week commencing 19 October 2026. The NSW Skills List has also been updated for the 190 program, while applications for NSW subclass 491 nomination remain closed across all pathways.

If you are considering NSW state sponsorship, this is the time to check your occupation, skills assessment, residency position and SkillSelect Expression of Interest (EOI). An EOI does not guarantee an invitation, and NSW nomination is competitive. Preparing accurate, supportable information now can help you respond if NSW invites you to apply.

NSW subclass 190 nomination is open

The subclass 190 is a points-tested permanent visa. NSW nomination is a separate selection process: applicants cannot lodge a direct application for NSW nomination unless NSW first invites them to apply. NSW selects candidates to meet the state’s skills needs, and the final visa decision remains with the Australian Government.

To be considered, your nominated occupation must be eligible for the subclass 190 and fall within an ANZSCO unit group on the current NSW Skills List. The list identifies occupations at the unit-group level. Not every occupation within a listed group is automatically eligible for the visa, so check both the NSW list and the Commonwealth skilled occupation rules for your specific occupation.

NSW also sets residency criteria for candidates. Depending on whether you are onshore or offshore when selected, you may need to be working in NSW in your nominated occupation for at least 20 hours a week, to have continuously lived in NSW for at least six months, or to have continuously lived offshore for at least six months.

First NSW 190 invitation round expected from 19 October 2026

NSW expects its first subclass 190 invitation round for 2026–27 to take place in the week commencing 19 October 2026. This is an expected timing, not a guaranteed invitation date for an individual applicant. NSW may conduct invitation rounds throughout the program year, and receiving an invitation is at the state’s discretion.

NSW considers a range of factors when selecting EOIs, including age, English ability, qualifications, points score and skilled work experience. Meeting the minimum visa criteria or having a high SkillSelect score does not by itself secure NSW nomination.

Before the round, review your EOI carefully. Check that your occupation, skills assessment, English results, qualifications, employment history, points claims, location and contact details are current. Keep documentary evidence for every claim. If invited, you will need to support those claims with valid documents within the response period stated in the invitation. The NSW program page currently states that an invitation is valid for 14 days and that this period will not be extended.

What changed in the NSW Skills List?

The updated NSW Skills List applies to the subclass 190 program. It reflects occupations NSW has identified as aligned with state priorities and skills demand. The published list uses ANZSCO unit groups, so applicants should confirm that their precise occupation is both included in an eligible unit group and available for the subclass 190 visa.

A listed occupation is only one part of the assessment. You will also need to meet the visa requirements, hold a suitable and valid skills assessment, satisfy NSW’s nomination criteria and be selected through an invitation round. Check the NSW Skills List and Home Affairs occupation information directly before making decisions, as program settings can change.

NSW subclass 491 update: pathways remain closed

Applications for NSW nomination under the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) remain closed to new applicants under all pathways. NSW has said it will provide another update when further information is available. The NSW Regional Skills List for the 491 program is also awaiting a further update.

If you are interested in regional migration, do not assume that a future NSW 491 opening will use the same criteria as the 190 program. Keep an eye on official NSW announcements and consider whether other state nomination, employer-sponsored or independent skilled visa pathways may fit your circumstances.

NSW Health Deployment Program

The NSW Health Deployment Program offers nurses, midwives and allied health professionals short-term placements of two to 13 weeks across NSW. The program may provide paid travel, accommodation and other financial support. It is a workforce deployment opportunity and is separate from NSW skilled visa nomination. Check the program’s own eligibility and conditions if you work in a relevant health profession.

How to prepare for NSW state sponsorship?

  • Check the occupation lists. Confirm that your occupation is eligible for the subclass 190 and appears within an identified NSW ANZSCO unit group.
  • Review your skills assessment. Make sure it is valid, matches the occupation you intend to nominate and supports the claims in your EOI.
  • Recalculate your points. Check age, English, qualifications, skilled employment, partner points and any other claimed factors against current rules.
  • Confirm your residency position. NSW applies different criteria to onshore and offshore candidates. Your EOI should accurately reflect your circumstances.
  • Gather evidence before an invitation arrives. Documents can take time to obtain. Organise evidence for employment, qualifications, English results, identity and other points claims in advance.
  • Consider more than one pathway. NSW nomination is competitive and invitations are not guaranteed. You may have other skilled or employer-sponsored options worth assessing.
