About the 191 Visa

The 191 Visa Regional Provisional Stream allows people who have lived and worked in a designated regional area of Australia on an eligible visa to live and work in Australian permanently. Eligible visa requirements are met if the applicant has held a 491 or 494 Visa for at least three years before the application is lodged.

Additionally, eligible family members can be included in the application. If eligible, you can become an Australian citizen before the visa validity period of 5 years expires.

  • You must have held a regional provisional visa either the Subclass 494 or 491 for at least three years.
  • You must provide notices of assessment issued by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) for three income years out of the five years of your eligible visa.​
  • In addition, you must have complied with the condition of the regional provisional visa you hold or have held.​
  • Stay in Australia indefinitely​
  • Work and study in Australia​
  • Enrol in Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses​
  • Apply for Australian citizenship (if you are eligible)​
  • Sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence​
  • Travel to and from Australia for five years from the date the visa is granted (after that time, you will need a resident return visa or another visa to return to Australia).​
