About the 500 Visa

The student visa (Subclass 500) allows you to study an eligible course at a recognised Australian institution. You are required to be enrolled in a CRICOS-registered course, and must provide a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), be a genuine student, have sufficient funds, English proficiency, health cover, and meet health and character requirements. You may be able to apply for this visa onshore or offshore.

A student visa can take from a few weeks to a few months to be granted. 

For the most up-to-date processing times, refer to the Department of Home Affairs website.

  • DHA primary applicant visa fee – $2,000. If your passport is from Brunei, Canada, China, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Macau SAR, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, or the USA you pay the lower visa application fee of $730 (vs $2,000 for others). 
  • DHA secondary applicant visa fee (18 and over) – $1,225
  • DHA secondary applicant visa fee (under 18) – $400
  • Other fees such as health examinations, police checks, and document translations may apply.
  • Professional fees for migration services are separate.

Other fees may apply if you are applying under the Postgraduate research sector, Foreign Affairs or Defence sector, Secondary exchange (schools sector), or you are an eligible Pacific Island or Timor-Leste Student and Student Guardian visa applicant.
